In East Berlin in the 1970s, young Hans Bronstein discovers his father and two other Jewish Holocaust survivors holding a former concentration-camp guard prisoner and trying to force a confession from him. The novel explores memory, justice, trauma, Jewish identity, and the gulf between survivors and the generation born after the Holocaust.
