Bill Martin Jr.'s picture book, illustrated by Eric Carle, is built on one question asked over and over. The brown bear sees a red bird, the red bird sees a yellow duck, and each animal in turn names the next, until the teacher sees the children and the children see every animal again. The repeated question and the rhythm of the answers are the whole design, and they are why this is often the first book a child can say by heart.
