Apollonius of Perga's Conics is the ancient Greek study of the curves you get by cutting a cone: the ellipse, the parabola and the hyperbola. Written about 200 BC, it named the sections, gathered what was known about them into a single systematic theory, and remained the standard work on the subject for centuries, first in the Greek tradition and then in the Arabic one.
