An Ambleside year is a year of the Ambleside Online programme, not a reader's age. Year 0 is its first year, and a book used over several years shows the span. The ages beside it are that band offered two grades up and none down, which is how we offer a band; they are a placement, not a reading measure.

Frank Lewis Dyer and Thomas Commerford Martin's life of Thomas Edison, written with the inventor's cooperation and with access to his papers, follows the work in the order it was done: the telegraph and the stock ticker, the telephone transmitter, the phonograph, the incandescent lamp and the power system that made the lamp useful, the ore mills and the storage battery. It is a technical biography, more interested in how a thing was invented than in the character of the man who invented it.
