An Ambleside year is a year of the Ambleside Online programme, not a reader's age. Year 0 is its first year, and a book used over several years shows the span. The ages beside it are that band offered two grades up and none down, which is how we offer a band; they are a placement, not a reading measure.
Georges Victor Legros's life of Jean-Henri Fabre (1823-1915), the French teacher and entomologist who spent his life watching insects — the wasps, the spiders, the beetles and the cicadas of his own garden — and wrote about them so well that scientists and poets claimed him equally. The title states the book's argument: Fabre's gift was patient observation followed by clear, unhurried description.
