An Ambleside year is a year of the Ambleside Online programme, not a reader's age. Year 0 is its first year, and a book used over several years shows the span. The ages beside it are that band offered two grades up and none down, which is how we offer a band; they are a placement, not a reading measure.
Sir Robert Stawell Ball, the Royal Astronomer of Ireland, wrote sixteen short lives of the men whose work made the modern picture of the heavens: Ptolemy and Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, Galileo and Kepler, Newton, Flamsteed, Halley, Bradley, William Herschel, Laplace and their successors, ending with the two astronomers who found Neptune by calculation. Each chapter sets out the problem, the method and the discovery, and each stands on its own.
