An Ambleside year is a year of the Ambleside Online programme, not a reader's age. Year 0 is its first year, and a book used over several years shows the span. The ages beside it are that band offered two grades up and none down, which is how we offer a band; they are a placement, not a reading measure.

The young Richard becomes Duke of Normandy when his godly father, Duke William, is foully murdered by Arnulf of Flanders. At first, he is vengeful, but during the story he finds himself tested and persistently reminded of his last conversation with his father in which his father commends the virtue of forgiveness. In this course, he is assisted by mentors such as Osmond de Centeville, his squire, Eric de Centeville, his guardian, his loyal Norman barons, and the Abbot of Jumieges, his father's spiritual mentor. He contends with several people cast in the role of villains, notably the King and Queen of France and their spoiled, 'imperious' son, Lothaire, as well as Arnulf, his father's murderer.
