In the fur-trading years on Mackinac Island, in the early 1800s, Oneta — daughter of Tecumseh and granddaughter of an Ojibwa chief — grows up between the world of her mother's people and the French, British and American traders, missionaries and settlers closing in around it. Iola Fuller's first novel won the 1939 Hopwood Award at the University of Michigan, and it tells the story of that collision from the side that was losing it.
