Reading measures

Suggested reading age
ages 12–15
Ambleside year
Year 7 onwards · ages 12–15

An Ambleside year is a year of the Ambleside Online programme, not a reader's age. Year 0 is its first year, and a book used over several years shows the span. The ages beside it are that band offered two grades up and none down, which is how we offer a band; they are a placement, not a reading measure.

Andrew Lang's life of Joan of Arc, from the village of Domrémy and the voices, through the winter journey to the court at Chinon in Lent 1429, the relief of Orléans and the campaign that followed, to the trial at Rouen and the burning. Lang wrote from the sources and tried to leave both the legend and the debunking aside, which is what makes his plain account of her, and of the men who used her, still worth reading.
