A collection of animal folktales, proverbs, songs, and sketches framed as stories told by the fictional Uncle Remus to a young boy. Many center on the clever Br’er Rabbit, who survives conflicts with stronger animals through wit and trickery. The book preserves elements of African American oral folklore while its plantation setting, racial framing, and representation of dialect have also made it a subject of longstanding criticism and debate.
