An Ambleside year is a year of the Ambleside Online programme, not a reader's age. Year 0 is its first year, and a book used over several years shows the span. The ages beside it are that band offered two grades up and none down, which is how we offer a band; they are a placement, not a reading measure.

Sir Thomas More wrote Utopia in Latin and published it in 1516, inventing both the word and the form. It describes a fictional island society in the Atlantic Ocean whose communities hold their goods in common and organize their days around work, learning and leisure, and it frames the account as a conversation that leaves open whether the island is a model to be copied or a mirror held up to Europe. The word outlived the argument: a utopia now means any imagined ideal society — or a real community trying to build one — and its opposite, dystopia, is the same invention pointed the other way. This edition is Paul Turner's translation.
