The reader carries a mental library of stories that later literature assumes — fairy tale, Greek and Roman myth, Norse myth, Biblical narrative, Arthurian legend, Homer, tragedy. It is the capacity that unlocks the most other books.
History & Civilization What it means
The ability to place a book inside the world that produced it: not dates, but monarchy, church, empire, class, revolution, war and the conventions of a society that is not ours.
